A free family literacy program created to give families opportunities to be actively involved in learning together. The major components of the program are: Adult Education , Early Childhood Education , Parenting Education & Support , Parent & Child Together Time , Home Visits .
	Located in the hills of East Tennessee, the Johnson City Even Start Family Literacy Program is designed to help families meet their educational and parenting goals. Based on research that supports the belief that the parent is the child's first and most important teacher, Even Start is dedicated to helping parents and children reach their full learning potential. Families that are eligible for the services of Even Start commit to attending adult education classes , according to their needs. These may include G.E.D. or E.S.O.L. preparation, adult literacy, work skills or training. Parents also attend parenting education and support services offered by Even Start and various collaborators. Parents and children participate in interactive activities called P.A.C.T. (Parent and Child Together) time. The children of these parents attend our early childhood education program located at 100 Dyer Street in Johnson City. Educational home visits are offered to all families. High-quality children's books and family-centered activities are the hallmarks of the home visit program. A Family Literacy Program
A typical day at Even Start begins when a parent comes by the Center at 8:15 a.m. and visits the staff for a while before leaving for his/her G.E.D. or E.S.O.L. class. The child stays at our Center and participates in a fun day of stories, songs, arts and crafts , discovery activities, etc. until the parent returns from class at 12:15 p.m. At that time the parent and child eat lunch together, which the Even Start Center provides with the help of Mountainview Elementary School . After lunch, the parents and children play together before leaving the Center at 12:45 p.m. One day during the week the parent stays longer and participates in Parent Support Group activities.
