Proud to be a Reward School

Johnson City Schools named Exemplary District; Fairmont, Towne Acres named Reward Schools

Johnson City School officials were notified on Friday that the District has reached a rare distinction as Johnson City was named an Exemplary School District by the Tennessee Department of Education.

The system also learned that Fairmont Elementary and Towne Acres Elementary were two of 59 schools across the state that earned Reward School status based on their academic performance. The Reward designation is given to the top five percent of the schools with the highest success rates in the state.

“With our district receiving results of state standardized tests developed around more rigorous ELA and math standards, our scores represent some of the highest achievement gains in the state,” Johnson City Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Barnett said. “By teaching to the more rigorous standards and getting students to apply knowledge, they will be ready for whatever the test may bring.

“While we saw improvement in many of our special populations, we have determined some opportunities for continued growth. I applaud the committed work of our outstanding teachers and students for the impressive results.”

The Johnson City School System significantly outperformed the state in all achievement categories. In grades 6-8 math, the system ranked first in the state’s East region. In grades 3-5 English and language arts and 3-5 math, the district ranked second in the East region behind Maryville City. In grades 6-8 English/language arts and science, the Johnson City School System finished third in the state’s East region.
