Fairmont one of 100 in nation named National Title I Distinguished Schools

Fairmont Elementary earned a rare distinction this week as they were named a National Title I Distinguished School. Fairmont is one of two schools in Tennessee and one of 100 across the nation to earn the honor.

“It is an enormous honor for our school and system to be recognized with a national award,” Fairmont Elementary Principal Carol McGill said. “This particular award means a great deal because it symbolizes the success that all students are able to attain.”

“We are truly grateful for our parent and community support which is such an important part of assuring high student success. We are passionate about our students and hope that this only brings focus on their achievement and the efforts of the Fairmont staff.”

The National Title I Distinguished Schools Program is a project of the National Title I Association that publicly recognizes schools for their positive educational advances. Fairmont was selected by the Tennessee State Department of Education based on their outstanding performance in one of these three categories: Category 1: Exceptional student performance for two consecutive years; Category 2: Closing the achievement gap between student groups; Category 3: Excellence in serving special populations of students.

A project of the National Title I Association, the National Title I Distinguished Schools Program publicly recognizes qualifying Title I schools for the outstanding academic achievements of their students. It highlights the efforts of schools across the country making significant improvements for their students.

The national recognition adds to the list of honors for Fairmont and McGill in 2017. Fairmont, along with Towne Acres, earned Reward School Distinction for Performance by the Tennessee Department of Education and McGill was one of nine finalist for the Tennessee Principal of the Year Award.

The National Title I Association implemented the National Title I Distinguished Schools Program to highlight selected schools that have successfully used their Title I federal funds to improve the education for economically disadvantaged students.
