Foodservice prepping for busy summer

After serving over 1 million breakfasts, lunches and snacks throughout the 2017-2018 school year, the Johnson City Schools’ Foodservice is gearing up for another important summer feeding program.

The program, which will run from June 1 to July 20, will provide food for 18 different summer programs hosted by Johnson City Schools and the City of Johnson City.

“We worry about our students during the summer months,” Johnson City Schools Supervisor of Food Services Karen McGahey said. “I know there are other programs throughout our community, but we are just happy to be out there and being a part of getting food to our students. And our staff loves to do it.”

For more than a decade, Johnson City Schools’ Foodservice has been serving breakfast and lunch at summer programs. Last year, the group served over 22,000 lunches and 14,000 breakfasts over the summer. They expect to serve a similar amount this year through the 2018 Seamless Summer Program of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Students that are enrolled in the programs will receive breakfast and lunch free of charge. If students aren’t registered for summer programming, but still need food, they can find the Bookmobile at its locations, Monday-Thursday, from June 4 to July 26. The Bookmobile schedule is below:
