Johnson City Schools set to deploy take-home Chromebooks for Science Hill students

Johnson City Schools is taking another step toward finalizing their 1:1 student to device ratio at the end of the month, as they begin to distribute around 2,300 Chromebooks to Science Hill High School students.

Each student will be bringing home a letter and User Agreement on Friday, October 5 with more information. These devices will be checked out to each student for use at school and at home while enrolled as a student at Science Hill High School. The deployment will begin on October 16 for Science Hill seniors with the last name Addel to Maksould-Kimball. The rest of the schedule can be found below.

“We are tremendously excited to begin our Chromebook deployment, allowing every Science Hill student the opportunity to develop skills necessary in today’s digital world,” Science Hill principal Todd Barnett said. “Our teachers, led by Dr. David Timbs and Dr. Carmen Bryant, have spent the previous two years participating in rigorous professional development activities preparing for this occasion.

“They have developed lessons and prepared activities to prepare for this shift in the way students consume and produce content as well as enhanced their own ability to deliver instruction. We feel strongly that having the capability to add this necessary tool to our students toolbox will further enhance our students ability to not only compete, but excel, in a fiercely competitive global economy.”

Per Johnson City Board of Education Policy, a $20 annual user fee per student is required to receive a Chromebook. This fee covers the receipt of the Chromebook, a charger, a protective carrying case, and one incident of accidental damage. The fee is due at the time a student receives their Chromebook.

“This milestone represents more than a year of planning and preparation by the staff at Science Hill High School and our technology department,” said Johnson City Schools’ Supervisor of Secondary and Instructional Technology Dr. David Timbs. “Our Board of Education has really prioritized being able to provide these new learning tools to enhance the learning opportunities for all of our students.”

Chromebooks will be deployed to Liberty Bell students in November.

The deployment will be as follows on each designated day from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. inside the Science Hill CCTE Building at 251 Cotty Jones Lane on the campus of Science Hill High School.
