Middle Grades Program of Studies - Band
5th Grade Band is a yearlong elective course designed to provide students with foundational music skills, including musical vocabulary, reading music, counting, performing basic notes and rhythms. This introductory course requires no previous instrument experience. Prior to the beginning of the school year, each student is individually tested for instrument compatibility. Fifth grade students begin with wind instruments including, flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and baritone. Students meet daily in homogenized groups comprised of woodwinds and brass, ensuring individualized attention. The fifth grade band performs during the winter and spring band concerts.
6th Grade Band builds on the musical foundation previously established as the focus shifts toward expanding musical vocabulary, rhythm, and musical expression. Students begin performing ensemble literature, challenging students to understand their individual roles in the success of the ensemble. In addition to the instruments introduced during fifth grade, the sixth grade band also includes saxophone, bass clarinet, French horn, tuba, and percussion. Students meet daily during a yearlong elective course and also participate in several afterschool rehearsals. Sixth grade band performs in two evening concerts a year, as well as multiple day-time performances for rising fifth grade students.
7th Grade Band is an ensemble which provides students with learning and performance opportunities on wind and percussion instruments. The focus of this year-long class is on developing and expanding previously learned musical skills. In addition to the continued study of technique and musical expression, band students are exposed to challenging and varied musical literature. Along with full ensemble, individual achievement is encouraged through participation in solo and ensemble performances, honor bands, and private lessons. The seventh grade band meets every day, has some after-school rehearsals, and performs at least two concerts a year.
8th Grade Band is an ensemble which is designed to further develop strong musical skills through the practice and performance of higher-level literature. Along with large ensemble performance, individual achievement is encouraged through participation in solo and ensemble performances, honor bands, and private lessons. The eighth grade band meets every day, has several after-school rehearsals, performs for school pep rallies, plays during a high school football game with the high school marching band, performs at least two concerts a year, and typically competes in a spring band contest/trip.
Percussionists – in addition to learning and performing with the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade concert bands, all percussionists will be placed into a percussion ensemble. These groups develop skills and techniques which are specific to the needs of a developing percussionist. The percussion ensembles rehearse during class throughout the spring and perform in the “Night of Percussion” concert.
