Olson’s Martial Arts Academy surprises two Johnson City Schools’ teachers
Olson’s Martial Arts Academy surprised two Johnson City Schools’ teachers on Tuesday by awarding them each with $500 to spend for their classrooms.
Woodland 4th-grade English language arts teacher Kelsey Pickering and Liberty Bell 8th-grade English language arts teacher Haley Money were selected as the winners after they replied to a social media post about how their classrooms would benefit from the donations.
Amanda Olson, co-owner of Olson’s Martial Arts Academy, and her family delivered the money and good news on Tuesday.
“We spend a lot of time in the schools with the different programs we offer and we know that teachers can always use a little extra help for their classrooms,” Olson said. “Teachers work so hard and sometimes they have to use their own money, so we thought it would be a good idea to make these donations.”
Both teachers were elated to see the Olsons walk into their classrooms.
“It’s good to feel supported by people in our community,” Pickering said. “I know my students will really benefit and appreciate this generous donation from Olson’s Martial Arts.”
Pickering said she will use the money to add to her classroom library and buy more flexible seating for her students.
Money has similar plans for the $500 she received, as she will purchase books to go in her classroom library.
“This money will be used to add current books to our classroom library and to build new flexible learning areas to support classroom activities,” Money said. “I am so appreciative of the Olson’s Martial Arts Academy and their continuous support of education. I have taught many students who attend the academy, and I am very pleased to know that our community has such great role models guiding our youth.”
