Science Hill named 17th best high school in Tennessee, according to U.S. News and World Report


Science Hill is ranked the 17th best high school in Tennessee, according to the latest rankings from the U.S. News & World Report. The ranking is an improvement from last year’s 21 and a climb of 11 spots from the 2016-2017 ranking of 28.

“We are proud of the students, teachers, staff and administrators at Science Hill High School for earning this prestigious recognition as one of the top high schools in Tennessee,” Johnson City Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Barnett said. “Our district and community take great pride in our school system and provide our students with a variety of opportunities and support to ensure they are prepared to accomplish their goals after graduation with a diploma from Science Hill.”

Science Hill principal Todd Barnett noted that he and his staff are very pleased with their continued progress. Science Hill scored a 92.5 out of a possible 100 in this year’s results.

“This continued improvement is a tribute to the hard work and focus our students bring to the classroom each day and the commitment of our Hilltopper staff in providing the rigor necessary for our students to compete with their peers across the state,” Science Hill principal Todd Barnett said. “It is also a tribute to the continued support of our district leadership in providing Science Hill with the tools and resources necessary to perform at a high level. Moving forward, we will continue to focus on providing an exceptional learning environment for all our students.”

The 17th-place ranking is amongst 345 high schools in the state. Science Hill also ranked 1,334 out of 17,792 high schools nationwide. In the report, which can be found here, Science Hill was ranked #5 in their Math and Performance Ranking and #229 nationally. They also ranked #12 in Math and Reading Proficiency and ranked in the top 50 in College Curriculum Breadth Index (37) and College Readiness Index (41). Data used in this report is from the 2017-2018 school year.

At Science Hill High School, students have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of opportunities whether they are preparing for college and/or a career. Science Hill has expanded its Advanced Placement offerings to 24 classes and have also increased their offerings in dual enrollment and statewide dual credit. Science Hill students also have the opportunity for industry certification in multiple career paths at the Science Hill Career, College and Technical Education program. Some of the classes at the CTE campus include welding, auto mechanics, cosmetology, nursing, law enforcement, and digital media.
