Science Hill High School’s plans to honor their 2020 graduates were approved by the Johnson City Board of Education on Monday afternoon during their planned digital board meeting.

Science Hill will honor its graduates with a senior recognition video and will also plan a traditional ceremony that will take place in either June or July. The Science Hill administration will plan to have a ceremony June 19th-20th inside the Freedom Hall Civic Center or Kermit Tipton Stadium. If a ceremony on that date is not possible, Science Hill will plan to host a ceremony on July 24th-25th, pending approval by local and state public health and governmental authorities.

“The Science Hill administration has worked hard to make sure that we have the opportunity to honor the Science Hill Class of 2020,” Johnson City Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Barnett said. “We are pleased that we will be able to honor our seniors with a senior video and we are also hopeful that we will be able to come together in June or July and give the seniors the ceremony they have earned.”

Science Hill principal Todd Barnett said that the school could host as many as six ceremonies, if necessary, and will live stream all graduation ceremonies to ensure that families who cannot attend will still be able to see their student graduate.

“During this process, we discussed several possibilities for Class of 2020 recognition and Graduation activities,” Barnett said. “After getting feedback from a variety of sources, most notably members of our senior class, it became apparent that a traditional ceremony would be the ideal choice.

“We want to do everything we can to allow our seniors to have a ceremony they have earned. To that end, our plan is to make every effort to have a traditional graduation, provided the guidance from local and state authorities allows us to do so.”

The Science Hill Class of 2020 senior recognition video will include photos of the Class of 2020 in slideshow format and other graduation ceremony staples, including speeches from district administration, Science Hill principal Todd Barnett and SGA senior president Saanvi Goenka.

The senior recognition video will be streamed on Saturday, May 30th at 10 a.m. on Johnson City Schools website, social media channels and the JCTV Station on channel 192 (Charter) and channel 17 (Comcast). The video will be made available to students and families as a keepsake.

While the hopes are to have a traditional graduation ceremony, the ceremonies could be eliminated should health restrictions remain in Phase 1. Science Hill has also made changes to their elementary school senior recognitions and the annual senior honors day program. More information will be available as details are finalized. OTHER EVENTS

Senior Recognition at Elementary Schools: Instead of having traditional gatherings at the home elementary schools for our senior Class of 2020, we will have a drive-by opportunity on May 15th at 1:30 p.m.  Seniors are encouraged to drive by their home school where they will be recognized by faculty and staff. Students will be required to stay in their vehicles at all times and follow CDC guidelines for social distancing and appropriate personal protection during this event. Your elementary schools look forward to welcoming you!

Class of 2020 Senior Awards: Plans are being developed to host a virtual Senior Awards Ceremony to be broadcast on Saturday, May 30th along with our Senior Recognition video. During this program, we will announce and recognize those seniors who have earned the traditional athletic, academic, and military scholarships that are typically presented during Senior Awards Day. It will be viewable and downloadable at any time after it is broadcast the first time.
