Bookworm Mobile 2020 runs Mondays-Thursday from June 15 - July 17

Bookworm Mobiles set to hit the road on June 15

Students looking for their next great book will be pleased to see the Johnson City Schools’ Bookworm Mobile return for its fifth year. This year there will be two Bookworm Mobiles that will shadow the eight buses providing meals at mobile feeding sites. The buses will run June 15 through July 17 and will allow students to pick out a free book to enjoy.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to provide free books to the children in our community,” Johnson City Schools Response to Intervention Coach Ali Gardenhour said. “Students are often looking for activities throughout the summer and reading is one of the best activities to keep their minds active.”

According to Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, students should try to read at least six books over the summer to help them retain the knowledge they’ve learned over the school year. The Bookworm Mobile has served as a successful way to reach students who are home during the summer, according to Johnson City Schools Director of Accountability and School Improvement Robbie Anderson.

“I believe summer reading is important because it promotes an interest in books, helps keep reading skills up, and encourages a life-long love of reading,” Anderson said. “Our summer bookworm mobile service is a great program because it connects with children at the neighborhood level and ensures they have access to free and engaging reading materials during the long summer months. I’m grateful to all of our staff that make this program possible.”
