Paul Slonaker Paul Slonaker was in administration at Science Hill from 1963-80, primarily as principal. A World War II tank commander, Slonaker never lost his grit. "Paul could run a tight ship," Science Hill athletic director Sidney Smallwood said. But he had a soft spot for sports, which led to close friendships with the likes of Smallwood and assistant coach Paul Christman, another World War II veteran. Science Hill Hall of Famer Herb Greenlee remembers how Slonaker, affectionately known as "The Pope," and maintenance supervisor George Biddle policed the glistening basketball court Harris-Tarkett installed in the Topper Palace in 1967. "The Pope and George Biddle rode herd over that new court," Greenlee said. "You couldn't so much as take a cup of water in that gym." Biddle recalls Slonaker anxiously spectating during games, mainly football and basketball, but never hasseling the coaches. "Paul was always good to follow the teams," Biddle said. "If you were in sports, I have to think he was a good principal to have."
