Paul Taylor ran track and cross country at Science Hill beginning in the late '70s. He concluded his career in style, winning the state championship in the 880 in 1980.

Taylor's feat was all the more impressive when considering he had already impressively anchored the Hilltoppers' two-mile relay team, which finished second.

"Paul anchored that and still went out and did an impressive job," said Bill McKinney, who was on the relay team with Taylor. "He ran something like 1:56 in the 880, which was outstanding at the time. Paul sort of ran away with it. He was an outstanding middle distance runner.

"You'd always see Paul on the roads running. He had a very good work ethic and always prepared very well."
