Phil Stuart 1984

Phil Stuart played on the offensive line at Science Hill through 1983. The imposing 6-foot-5, 275-pounder was All-State, and signed with Tennessee after being recruited heavily by Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Kentucky and North Carolina.

He went in Johnny Majors' same class with Morristown East quarterback Randy Sanders, whose Hurricanes Stuart was ecstatic to beat during his senior season. Stuart, who started for the Vols in '88, remains friends with Sanders and Phillip Fulmer, who was his position coach for Majors.

Stuart, who also played basketball for Dennis Greenwell and threw the shot put, loved playing football for Mike Martin his final season at Science Hill.

"We probably had more talent my sophomore and junior seasons but went 5-5," Stuart said. "Then Martin comes in and we beat (Dobyns-Bennett) and go 8-2." The admiration was mutual.

"He's got size, strength and foot quickness," Martin told the Press-Chronicle's Keith Kimberlin after Stuart made All-State. "He's the best offensive lineman I've ever coached."
