Walter Deneen

Walter Deneen 1983

Walter Deneen graduated from Science Hill in 1983.  Walter won back to back state cross country titles in 1981-82 while running for Snake Evans.  He was All-American his senior year after setting a state record (14:16.4), for a three-mile course.  At the time this was the 11^th fastest time in the country.  Legendary Daniel Bone Coach Karl Winkle once told the Johnson City Press “Walter Deneen is the best distance runner the state of Tennessee has ever produced.”

Deneen went on to run for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He is currently employed by the City of Johnson City and the Atlantic Southeast Airlines.
