(FAFSA) is available in the Counseling Office or students and parents can go on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. A pin number is necessary for students and parents and can be obtained at www.pin.ed.gov. Keep your pin numbers in a safe place to use throughout college. On-line applications will produce a quicker response. FAFSA’s should be completed as soon as W-2 forms are received (no later than March 1st for financial aid). The quicker the forms are submitted, the better the chance to actually receive money if you qualify. Please talk with the counselors or with a college financial aid office if you have questions. Always keep a copy of your FAFSA and the student aid report that you should receive. FAFSA’s must be completed each year. This is necessary in order to receive the Tennessee Hope and other Lottery Scholarships.
There are many local scholarships available at Science Hill High School. The competition is among Science Hill students only, so the chance for being awarded money is much greater. These scholarship applications were available in the Counseling Office in January. Students should watch the announcements and check the scholarship board in the Counseling Office as well. The scholarship winners will be announced at Awards Program May 16th.

Forms will be given to seniors on Friday, April 25th at 8am in the 10-12 Auditorium during the senior meeting. COUNSELING NEWS
FINANCIAL AID – Want to earn $16,000.00 toward college? Financial Aid Night will be held at East Tennessee State University’s D.P. Culp Center, Thursday, December 13, 2007, at 6 p.m. Information will be shared regarding completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), the Lottery Scholarship, and other lending options. Representatives from local colleges and universities and the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) will be available to offer information.
The FAFSA should not be completed until after January, 2008. Tax information is completed for families after January 1, 2008. Parents and students should be applying now for their PIN numbers at the following website: pin.ed.gov. You will need an email address, social security number, pass phrases and birthdates to apply for your pin. The pin numbers will be emailed back to you. Keep accurate records of pin numbers and pass phrases since these are necessary to use as an electronic signature when you do complete your FAFSA every year that you attend college.
Local Scholarship information will be available at Financial Aid Night. Applications will be available for students after winter break. Check our daily announcements at our website: jcschools.org/shhs.htm.
STUDY SKILLS COURSES will be offered by the Counseling Office to 10/12 students free and right after school. General study skills, note-taking, test taking skills, and test anxiety prevention will be some of the topics offered. Please watch the Daily Announcements for upcoming times, dates, and place.
COLLEGE APPLICATIONS should be completed as soon as possible. Colleges have deadlines for applications and especially for scholarships. Any application due the first week in January should be completed and transcripts requested by December 15th. Male students should remember to register with Selective Service as soon as possible after turning “18”. Failure to do so will delay admission and financial aid help. You must apply to college to obtain financial aid or complete the FAFSA. Clear all obligations before transcripts can be sent.
TESTING INFORMATION
Gateway Exams will be administered on the following dates: December 4-Gateway Math (Algebra), December 5-Gateway Language (English 10), December 6-Gateway Science (Biology). Only students who are enrolled in block schedule classes will complete these exams in December. Students who have previously failed the exam and those students who are new to Tennessee and have already taken the courses will also take the exams. Students who are currently enrolled in these Gateway Classes will be required to take these examinations. In addition to meeting the graduation requirements, these tests are counted as 15% of the student’s final grade in the course. If a student has already passed a Gateway Exam, but failed a class, they must take the Gateway Exam again as it is part of their final grade.
End of Course Exams will be administered as follows: December 10-U.S. History & English 9 (10-12 campus), December 11-Math Foundations 2 (10-12 campus only) & Physical science (9-12 students). Students currently enrolled in these courses must take these exams. These exams will count as 15% of the student’s final grade in the course.
PLAN Sophomore students and parents will receive results of the PLAN Test (the Preliminary ACT) in January. Students will obtain their score reports and the test booklet that they used when the PLAN was administered on November 8th. This is useful information for students to use when preparing for the ACT college entrance testing which usually occurs during our student’s junior year (11th grade). This test predicts ACT scores and also provides the results of an Interest Inventory which students may use to explore job and career opportunities. Please contact your student’s counselor if you would like to review the PLAN Score Report with them.
SENIOR INFORMATION:

LISTEN TO A LIST OF WEEKLY ACTIVITIES FOR SCIENCE HILL BY CALLING 232-2203.
Seniors should be completing college applications now. Many schools have Nov. 1 deadlines for honors level scholarships and early decision or early action. Be sure to pay the $5.00 senior fee, complete a transcript release form to be kept in the student’s record, pay all obligations (Call Shelia Bray, 232-2184 to check on obligations) and update your resume. If you need written recommendations from teachers, give them plenty of time to complete and offer them a copy of your resume. If you apply on-line, remember to tell the counseling office to send a transcript. If you complete a paper copy, bring your application to your counselor to be completed with your transcript and mailed. The faster you apply, the better chance you have of being accepted. Parents and students need to go on-line and check out a program at www.tn.kuder.com. This program provides occupational information, interest testing, college searches, financial aid and scholarship information. Students have access to all the information that can help them apply to colleges in their senior year. This program can be set up by the student and may be used throughout high school. Resume writing is also available. In order to complete an interest survey to determine possible occupations, students must see the counselor to obtain a special code. Eighth grade students will begin the program with follow-up in grade nine. Other good web sites can be found through www.jcschools.org/shhs under the counseling section. Daily announcements to students, which often contain scholarship information, can be found at the SHHS site.

So too does Mrs. Meers, who despite her kindly exterior is actually an unscrupulous white slaver.
