Safety Rules

Some of the equipment in the lab is dangerous; this includes items that are sharp, hard, electrical, etc.  This equipment should be handled carefully and respected.  There is to be absolutely NO:

  • Using material/equipment inappropriately

  • Throwing any objects

  • Leaving electrical/battery operated equipment turned on and unattended

  • Wasting materials

All students MUST follow appropriate safety guidelines outlined in each module (safety glasses, safety guards, etc.)

Alternative Energy

  • Solar panels should be handled carefully to avoid breaking.

  • HyRunner Car ONLY uses distilled water, obtain water from Ms. Crow if needed.

  • Electricity and water can be very dangerous, avoid spilling.  Clean up any spilled water before plugging in anything electrical.

  • Banana clips and wires should be used only for the activities outlined by the lab book.

  • Do not put fingers near moving fan parts at any time.  Allow the fans to slow down and stop on their own.

Digital Music

  • The keyboard/synthesizer should be used according to the activities outlined in the lab book.  The keyboard is an expensive item to replace and should be treated with care.

Electricity & Electronics

  • Banana clips and wires should be used only for activities outlined by the lab book.

  • No objects other than the provided banana clips should be put in the Electricity & Electronics trainer.

Flight Technology

  • The teacher will handle all preparations for the rocket launcher.  Students are not to handle the launcher without the teacher's permission.

  • Dowels and jigs are to be used appropriately.

Forensic Science

  • All testing powders should be handled with care.  Gloves should be worn during the appropriate experiments.

Laser Technology

  • The laser is to be handled very carefully.  It is NOT to be pointed in the direction of other students.  The laser can potentially cause blindness with directly shined in the eyes.

  • Glass lenses should be handled with care.  If broken, contact the teacher for clean-up.  Do not attempt to clean it up yourself.

  • Scattering solution and water should not be consumed.

Mechanisms

  • Keep hands, fingers, cloth, etc. out of the gears at all times.  When the machine is in motion the gears should remain clear of all objects.

Pneumatics

  • Do not point air hoses toward other students.  Air hoses should be handled carefully when pressure is being released.  The hoses may whip around accidentally, so care should be taken to protect your eyes.

Research and Development

  • Extreme care should be taken with the band saw and drill press.  These are high powered machines.  Eye protection should be worn at all times when operating these machines.  Any guards available should be used.  These machines are not to be used without forewarning to the teacher.

  • CO2 cartridges should be handled with care.

  • Spray paints should be pointed away from the face and away from the building.

  • All saws, files, and cutting equipment should be handled with care.

Robotics

  • Cye, the robot, is an expensive piece of equipment.  He should not be picked up or handled inappropriately. 

  • Cye should remain on his home base while not in use.

Structural Engineering

  • All saws, files, and cutting equipment should be handled with care.

  • Safety eyewear should be worn at all times when operating the structural tester.

Any broken materials as a result of the student not following the safety rules are the responsibility of the student.
