L to R: Mrs. Gray, Mrs. Pfeiffer, Ms. Shook, Mrs. Bunch
Expectations: To
continue the journey of being a life long learner. To develop
academic skills appropriate for first grade students.
To foster love of learning that will continue for a
lifetime. To instill social skills which will enable
them to be a contributing member of society. About First Grade: First grade begins the foundation upon which the other grades build. We have a very structured reading program with high expectations of reading skills including fluency, vocabulary development, phonemic awareness and usage, and beginning comprehension skills. In math, the learner will be able to add, subtract, compare, estimate, graph, determine place value, tell time to the hour and half-hour, count money, recognize and count numbers by ones, twos, fives, and tens, identify fractions, and identify two and three dimensional figures. We complete thematic units in which we incorporate math, science, social studies, writing, and spelling. We have weekly spelling tests after the first nine weeks. We also assign reading homework in which the learner reads 20 minutes each night. Special Curriculum/Projects: First graders present reports in selected topics throughout the year. We incorporate three field trips to enhance our curriculum. We also have special activities, which include but are not limited to "Apple Tasting Day" and "100th Day Celebration". Saying/Quote: "On the way to the top, the learning NEVER stops." Teacher Web Links
