Subject Areas
Math
Each child will work on his or her own level of ability in class through classroom instruction and centers.
Students will work on math skills through the use of the school wide adopted text book series using workbooks,
as well as, the system wide Benchmarks Tests and hands-on activities. Children will be moved on according to their
ability on an individual basis. The Benchmark Tests are given in class in either a small group setting or individually
every nine weeks. A comprehensive test is given at the end of the school year. A checklist of the Benchmark percentages
will be included in each grade card. This checklist needs to be signed and returned.
Science and Social Studies
Our year-long theme is "Celebrations." The theme is broken into four components: "Partying with
LIFE SKILLS," "Let's Have a Fiesta," "Singing in the Rain," and "Bodies in Motion." Each component will last nine weeks.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday the multiage classes will break into Families: Blue Streamers, Yellow Party Hats,
and Red Balloons. Each family consists of children from all three multiage classes.
Author Study
Author study is a unique part of learning in which the children learn about many different children's book authors.
An author is selected every two weeks and we work with the other classes to discover the particular author and complete
activities. Author study takes place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. This year the following authors will be covered:
Eric Carle, Mem Fox, Don and Audrey Wood, Maurice Sendak, Steven Kellogg, Paul Goebel, Leo Lionni, Laura Ingles Wilder, Tommy dePaola,
Lois Elhert, Kevin Henkes, Ezra Jack Keats, Robert Munsch, Bill Peet, Mercer Mayer, Pat Hutchins, and Bernard Waber
