About the Johnson City Virtual Academy

The Johnson City Virtual Academy (JCVA) was established by the Johnson City Board of Education in February 2021.  The school will open to serve students in August 2021 in grades 5-12.  All teachers will be employees of Johnson City Schools and fully licensed to serve in the grades and content areas where assigned.  Remote learning opportunities will not be offered through any of the other eleven schools in the Johnson City School District during the 2021-22 school year.  For the first year of operation, there will be a limited number of seats available in grades 5-8.

There is no cost to attend JCVA for those students who live within the boundaries of Johnson City Schools.  Otherwise, regular tuition rates apply. Click here for tuition rates.

Blended Learning Approach
The JCVA will provide a blend of live, online instruction provided through Zoom, one of our education partners, and online, independent work provided through Canvas, our learning management system. Every JCVA student will be provided with a school-issued Chromebook for use at school and at home.

Curriculum, Course Offerings, and Assessments

The JCVA seeks to maximize flexibility for students and families while providing a strong learning experience for all learners. Teachers will use both live instruction and fully online approaches to delivering instruction while also providing weekly opportunities for small group and individualized support and consultation. Teachers at the JCVA will use the same curriculum resources used across the Johnson City School District as well as have access to the same online instructional tools used in our other schools.

Instructional Delivery
For all core academic classes, a dedicated JCVA teacher will deliver instruction in a blended format (live and online). Related-arts classes for grades 5-8 will be delivered fully-online by a JCS teacher.  Elective courses at the high school level as well as some Advanced Placement courses may be delivered via Canvas, live instruction through Zoom, dual enrollment with higher education institutions, and through our educational partners, Edmentum and the Niswonger Foundation.

Additional Support Services
Support for students qualifying for additional services through special education, RTI, or ESL will be served by JCS teachers as well.

All JCVA students will participate in the same formative and summative district assessment as students across the district.

Course Offerings - Grades 5-8
