Top 20 High School

For the second consecutive year, Science Hill High School ranked in the Top 20 high schools in Tennessee, according to the U.S. News & World Report. Science Hill finished as the 20th-ranked high school in Tennessee and finished 1,396 out of over 24,000 high schools in the country.

“We are so proud of the hard work of our students, staff, administration and families who helped us achieve this accomplishment,” Science Hill Principal Dr. Josh Carter said. “We continue to strive to provide the best education possible to all of the students in Johnson City. This ranking is an indication that we continue to move in the right direction. It has been our goal to remain in the top 20, and we will now progress those goals in hopes of advancing our ranking.”

While Science Hill did slide back a bit from 17th last year, they were one of only two high schools with over 2,000 students to finish in the top 20 rankings in Tennessee. The data used by the U.S. News & World Report for the rankings were based on school data from the 2018-2019 school year.

According to the U.S. News and World Report website, the methodology for identifying the top-ranked Best High Schools was developed with a core principle in mind: that the top high schools must serve all students well and must produce measurable academic outcomes that support this mission. According to the U.S. News Best High Schools methodology, schools were rated on the following six measures, and the weights used for each indicator in parentheses: college readiness (30 percent of ranking), college curriculum breadth (10 percent), reading and math proficiency (20 percent), reading and math performance (20 percent), underserved student performance (10 percent) and graduation rate (10 percent).

With an enrollment of just under 2,300 students, Science Hill offers a variety of courses to challenge and prepare students for whichever career path they choose. Science Hill offers over 30 Advanced Placement courses and multiple hands-on career technical classes that include construction, welding, culinary arts, automotive, childcare, business, digital media, criminal justice and others. Science Hill also has an array of athletic opportunities as well as performing arts opportunities that include theatre, orchestra, band and chorus.
