George Pitts
George Pitts and his Toppers of the early 90s reigned terror on teams, both locally and nationally, when they took the basketball court. Pitts tallied three state titles (1990, 1994 and 1995) and a runners-up (1991) during his tenure as the head basketball coach at Science Hill High School. Pitts also served as the Drivers Education teacher, athletic director and even a brief stint at Principal during his 17 years at Science Hill.
Of this honor, Pitts said, “it is an honor for me to be inducted into the Johnson City Schools Hall of Fame, and an honor that would not have been possible without the coaches I worked with and the amazing group of young men who desired to use their athletic abilities to work together and to accomplish great things for their school and community. As principal I had a faculty and staff that prepared young men and women in their classes to do great things not only in our community, but state, and country.”
After leaving Science Hill, Pitts would win four consecutive state titles in boy’s basketball at Brentwood Academy. Later he would go on to coach at King College where he led the men’s team to three AAC Championships and three NAIA National Tournament qualifications.
Pitts was inducted into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) in 2010. Pitts is currently in his 55th year of education and serves as the Athletic Director and Boys Basketball Coach at Providence Academy.
Pitts enshrinement into the JCS Hall of Fame is a testament to his excellence in coaching, and his role in shaping the future of countless young athletes in our community and others.
