The mission of the Instructional Technology Department of Johnson City Schools is to encourage and support transformative uses of technology that promote student learning through best teaching practices in accordance with the Tennessee State Standards. We work closely with the curriculum department, the professional learning department, the information technology department, administrators, and teachers to plan for the integration of technology into all facets of the curriculum and learning environment. Our chief goal is to promote a culture of transformative uses of technology where all Johnson City Schools' staff, teachers, and students use relevant and innovative digital tools.

Digital Resources

Digital Resource Policy

As a general rule, educators can use the features of online resources that do not require a student login, student name, any student information, and doesn’t gather student data. To use any site with a student login (including those that can be added in Clever), it must be vetted, approved, and we require a data privacy agreement in place. For the most part, vetted resources are in the single sign-on portal and on the JCS Approved Digital Resources List.

We are working to strengthen our communication and expectations to protect student privacy and support online resources. To use a non-approved resource that collects any student information (including stored data from answering questions and/or names even as an alias) and/or requires a student login (even with Google or Clever), you need to discuss it with your principal first. If your principal approves the request to consider the resource, you need to complete the Digital Platform Review Application (updated 11/1/23). New resources are not permitted for use until the review team approves the request.

Digital Citizenship

To empower students to be effective users of technology and information, the implementation of a Digital Citizenship curriculum must be a priority.

Digital Citizenship teaches students not only how to stay safe online, but how to express their opinions, communicate with others, recognize the truth versus what is fake news or clickbait and maintain a healthy media balance. It also gives students the skills needed to make positive choices that will allow them to be successful in their futures.

JCS Librarians are taking the lead on implementing the Digital Citizenship curriculum from Neptune Navigate teaching lessons regularly throughout the school year.

JCS Teacher Leaders

Now in its ninth year, the Johnson City Schools Teacher Leader Program ensures that we are building capacity to not only integrate instructional technology into our lessons, but that we are also building a peer support system for our teachers. In any of our schools, you can reach out to a Technology Teacher Leader for assistance, advice, suggestions, and support as you engage your students in the latest digital approaches. These teacher leaders will offer workshops and sessions both at the school and district level, and you are encouraged to reach out to them.
