The Johnson City Schools Virtual Learning Program (JCS VLP) is a fully online, mostly asynchronous alternative to the traditional in-person classroom experience for students in grades 6-12.

The program is offered through a collaborative partnership between Johnson City Schools and Pearson, a notable name in education with 20+ years of experience in online schools.  Pearson online school partnership information

Through this district partnership, accepted students are enrolled as students of Science Hill High School or Liberty Bell Middle School (including those zoned for Indian Trail Middle School).  However, instruction and coursework are delivered virtually using Pearson's academically challenging courses and supportive Tennessee-certified teachers.  These courses utilize the same state curriculum standards required of all public schools in Tennessee, and graduation requirements are the same as those required of other Science Hill High School students (28 credits).  A Science Hill High School diploma is awarded upon the completion of those requirements.

NOTE: Students residing outside of the Johnson City School district may be considered but are required to complete the same enrollment process as out-of-district in-person students, including tuition responsibilities.

Interested families must complete the program's application to be reviewed by the JCS Virtual Learning Program's admissions committee.

NOTE: Completing the application does not guarantee admission to the program.

The interest application is posted during each semester's open enrollment period (See above dates for Fall 2024's open enrollment window).  Parents are promptly contacted with acceptance/denial decisions following a thorough review.

The following factors are taken into consideration when reviewing program applicants:

  • Attendance

  • Past and Current Grades

  • Disciplinary Record

  • Low Credits/Credit Recovery Needs

The Johnson City Schools Virtual Learning Program is an academically rigorous program that requires high levels of reading comprehension, student autonomy, and perseverance.  While some flexibility is a sought-after benefit of this program, students are expected to log in daily, maintain adequate grades, make satisfactory progress, and participate in communication with educators.  Failure to adhere to these core expectations may result in dismissal from the program.
