Science Hill climbs to #14 in US News & World Report, Top 5 percent nationally



Science Hill continued its climb up the list of most effective high schools after the latest US News and World Report rankings were released on Tuesday. Science Hill ascended to the #14 spot out of 445 high schools in the state. Additionally, Science Hill was ranked in the top 5 percent in the country, ranking as the 1,159 best high school in the country out of 24,980 high schools across the country.

“We are very excited about our new ranking in the latest US News and World Report,” Science Hill principal Dr. Josh Carter said. “This ranking reflects the hard work and determination of our staff and students. We also could not attain this ranking without the encouragement and support of our city commission and board of education. We look forward to continuing our work as a school and achieving even more to climb the rankings in the coming years.”

While the six measures that determined each school’s rank were broadly the same as those in prior years, US News and World Report adjusted how three were calculated because of the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on schools in 2020-2021 – the most recent school year for which assessment data was available. Data is based on the 2019-2020, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school year.

There were six ranking indicators that were weighted to produce the overall score. Those indicators include College Readiness (30 percent), State Assessment Proficiency (20 percent), State Assessment Performance (20 percent), College Curriculum Breadth (10 percent), Underserved Student Performance (10 percent) and Graduation Rate (10 percent).

With an enrollment of more than 2,400, Science Hill offers a variety of courses to challenge and prepare students for whichever career path they choose. Science Hill offers over 27 Advanced Placement courses and multiple hands-on Career Technical Education classes that include construction, welding, culinary arts, automotive, childcare, business, digital media, criminal justice and others. Science Hill also has an array of athletic opportunities as well as performing arts opportunities that include theatre, orchestra, band and chorus.
