TCAP scores improve, best state averages by 20 percentage points

Johnson City Schools saw its TCAP scores improve by at least one percentage point for students considered to be proficient. Additionally, the Johnson City Schools’ averages bested Tennessee’s averages by at least 20 percentage points in all tested subjects.

"We are proud of our TCAP scores from this past spring,” Johnson City Schools Superintendent Steve Barnett said. “This achievement is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our teachers, the hard work of our students, the support of their families, and the collaborative efforts of our board of education and city commission. Together, we have created an environment where excellence is the standard, and this data reflects our community's commitment to education."

For English Language Arts, which included grades 3-8, as well as English 1 and 2 at the high school, the district had 59 percent of its students test proficient, compared to the state average of 39 percent.

Math saw similar numbers, with 60 percent of students in grades 3-8 testing proficiently. The state average for Tennessee was 40 percent. These scores did not include math end-of-course data, which will be available later in the fall pending the standards-setting process

Science included data from grades 3-8 and Biology, with Johnson City Schools’ students performing at 67 percent proficient, compared to the state average of 44 percent. Lastly, Social Studies, which included grades 3-8 and US History, saw 68 percent of students perform at proficiency, besting the state average of 45 percent.

In July, individual student data will be available in the TCAP Family Portal. Families can use the portal to obtain additional information to better understand their students' individual score reports and next steps for supporting their students' academic progress.
